Our First Giveaway!

Our first giveaway is finally here!

One thing we realized is that it's really difficult to purchase soaps and lotions over the internet because you can't smell them first. Some people are extremely sensitive to scents so purchasing a handmade soap and being stuck with a scent you hate might turn some people off. With that in mind, we put together our first prize. The winner of this giveaway will receive a bag of small slices of our soaps, samples of our lotions and body butters and a GIANT Fizzy of his/her choice. (Please note, not all soap & lotion samples are pictured. The winner will receive additional soaps and lotions, along with a GIANT Fizzy). If the response to the contest is positive, we may add the bag of soap slices sampler to our product line for sale.

The details of the contest are below. For each activity, an entry is put into the drawing. Some activities are worth more entries than others, such as liking our Facebook page. Others are only worth one entry, such as tweeting a special message or posting a blog comment, however you can do those things as often as you'd like. The contest runs until 11:59 pm on Thursday night, May 15, 2014. I'll announce the winner on this blog by Friday, May 16, 2014 at 8:00 pm. Follow the link below to submit your entrie(s). Don't forget, the more you tweet or post, the more times you'll get  your name entered. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. Good luck everyone!

Olive Oil - Liquid Gold for Your Skin

If you spend any time browsing the web for natural beauty recipes or reading the ingredients in many
Olive Oil - Liquid Gold
homemade soaps and bath products, olive oil is usually at the top of the list. This isn't some weird coincidence or because olive oil is a cheap ingredient (it really isn't, especially if extra virgin olive oil is used). Olive oil has so many wonderful benefits for skin and hair, you can even use it on its own.

Olive oil has long been prized for its moisturizing and restorative powers. Our ancient ancestors even knew how beneficial olive oil was. They had many uses for olive oil - as an anti-aging remedy, a moisturizer and even for first-aid. In fact, olive oil was so valuable to ancient people that it was believed one of the reasons they went to war was for control of olive plantations. It was so valuable it was called Liquid Gold by the great writer Homer.

Today, olive oil is used for cooking of course, but it is also used in many natural and organic soaps, bath and beauty products because of all its wonderful benefits. Olive oil contains antioxidants which help defend your body against free radicals or damaged cells from sun or environmental conditions. It also contains Vitamins A and E which helps skin remain youthful by preserving its elasticity.

Olive oil is a great cleanser and moisturizer. Oil breaks down oil, therefore olive oil  or even olive oil soap is a wonderful skin cleanser. It also does not clog pores like many of the commercial products on the market. It leaves moisture behind and seals it in, protecting the skin from damage.

Castile Soap

Lately, you'll see many olive oil soaps, or "castile" soaps available at drug stores and grocery stores. A true castile soap is made only with olive oil, water and the sodium hydroxide needed for saponification. Many soaps claim to be castile soap, but if you look closely at the label, you'll see they have a combination of oils in addition to olive oil, usually coconut oil, castor oil, palm oil, etc.

Castile Soap - 100% Pure Olive Oil Soap
Sunny Land Soap & Sundry's Castile Soap is a true castile soap, made with 100% pure olive oil, water and saponified sodium hydroxide. (Sodium hydroxide, also known as lye, is needed for the chemical reaction to turn the oils and water into soap. This is saponification.) There is no fragrance or color in our castile soap so it is extremely gentle. This is a great soap for those with sensitive skin, children or even conditions such as eczema. Many commercial soaps contain detergent in order to produce bubbles, which is drying for your skin. Our castile soap is very rich, creamy and moisturizing, but does not produce many bubbles because there is no detergent in it. It is gentle enough to use on your face but works great on your body, too. It is completely natural and 100% vegan.

Stop by our web store and buy a bar of our All Natural Castile Soap today. Or, ask for a free sample* of our Castile Soap with any other purchase of soap or lotion. Your skin will thank you!

*Valid until April 15, 2014

Why handmade soap? The difference between commercial and handcrafted.

Once you've tried handmade soap, it's really difficult to go back to the commercially produced store-bought variety. The unique scents, the luxurious feel and the amazing effects on the skin are enough to justify the price for most of us who have been converted. There are still those holdouts, however, who want to know why handmade soap is so much better than an 8-pack of soap at the store for $3.99. Handmade soap will never be a bargain, but once you learn about the benefits, as well as the negatives associated with commercially produced "soaps," you may agree that the price is well worth it.

Double Butter Luxury Spa Soap - Sea Salt & Lotus Blossom
Coming Soon!
The next time you visit the bath and body section of the grocery store or pharmacy, take a longer look at the soap section. You'll notice that very few of the soaps on the shelves are actually labeled as soap. That's because they are actually detergents. In order to be called soap, the product must meet the FDA definition for soap and undergo the saponification process. Saponification is the process where the oils/butters react with sodium hydroxide (better known as lye) to become soap. All true soaps need lye to convert oils/butters into soap. If a product cannot meet the definition for soap, it will usually be labeled as a beauty bar, deodorant bar, etc. While there are a few actual soaps on the shelves of large stores, these products which are commercial soaps are usually filled with chemicals, preservatives and detergents.

Another benefit of using handmade soap versus their commercially produced counterpart is glycerin. Glycerin is a natural byproduct of the saponification process. The companies producing soap realized how valuable glycerin was to other industries and began removing it from soap and selling it. Since commercial soaps are missing this key component, it's one of the reasons your skin feels so dry after your shower or bath when using them. Handmade soapmakers leave the glycerin in their soaps. This beneficial natural humectant actually pulls moisture from the air and binds it to your skin, leaving you feeling soft and moisturized.

Many people now realize how important it is to be just as careful of what they put on their bodies as what goes into them. The skin is our body's largest organ and as such, it deserves to be nourished appropriately. Many handmade soaps are made entirely of natural and organic ingredients, with oils, butters and botanicals chosen specifically for their beneficial properties for the skin. Here at Sunny Land Soap & Sundry, we superfat our soaps between 4% - 6%, which means we put extra oils/butters into our recipe that will not get saponified, so the soap is extra moisturizing and your skin will receive all the wonderful benefits of the natural oils and butters.

In the past, most soaps were made from animal fats or lard. We choose to use vegetable, fruit and nut oils/butters for our soaps. We do all we can to make sure no animals have been tested or harmed for any of the products we purchase as ingredients. We have made a commitment to help, and especially not hurt, our animal friends, so all of our soaps are vegetarian and many of them are also vegan.

Once you use handmade soap, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to go back to commercial soap again. With all the wonderful benefits for your skin and body, we think you'll agree that handmade soap is well worth the cost.
